In the Box
If you’re venturing off the grid, this small, rugged satellite communicator1 goes beyond the limits of cellular networks to keep friends and family in reach with global two-way text messaging.
Providing global two-way messaging and interactive SOS
(active satellite subscription required), it keeps you connected with friends and family
even when you’re out of cell coverage.
Use the device to check in with contacts, read and reply to their responses with
Preset Messages, and even share your GPS location. inReach Messenger provides
satellite communication either as a standalone device or when paired to the new
Garmin Messenger companion app for smartphones. The communicator’s internal,
rechargeable lithium battery gives up to 28 days of battery life – and also provides
safety charging to help recover a depleted phone.
When paired with the inReach Messenger App, users can sync with their smartphone’s contacts list
to make staying in touch even easier. For the most efficient messaging, the companion app can send
messages, post to social media or communicate with fellow adventurers through a cellular or Wi-Fi
connection when available, then with an active inReach subscription, automatically switch to the
100% global Iridium® Satellite network when no longer in cellular or Wi-Fi range. To keep all friends
and family up to date on a trip, the new Messenger companion app supports group text chats with
friends and family, even those without inReach devices. Users can continue in-app conversations at home using their
Wi-Fi or cellular connection without having to change settings.
The compact design measures 3.1” x 2.5”, allowing it to easily fit in a flight bag or rest on an aircraft glare shield. Like
all inReach devices, users can declare an emergency using the dedicated SOS button. Once an SOS is declared,
inReach Messenger sends a distress message to the IERCC, a 24/7 Garmin staffed professional emergency response
coordination center. The IERCC can communicate with the inReach Messenger user in addition to notifying the
applicable search and rescue organization or other resources. The IERCC will deliver a confirmation that help is on
the way and may provide updates on the status of the response effort. The IERCC may also reach out to the user’s
designated emergency contact and will monitor the event until it is resolved.
